What are school physicals and why are they so important?
School physicals are health exams that most schools demand before students can engage in athletics or other activities. These are annual visits that children and teenagers get from their doctors. This annual visit allows doctors to assess the child’s progress and address any physical, emotional, or social concerns.
Physicals are also a great way to ensure that your child’s vaccines are up to date and that they don’t have any serious health issues. Examination information will be provided to the school and to athletic personnel, so your child can be served accordingly at the school.
What’s the difference between well-child visits, school physicals, and athletic physicals?
These are essentially different titles for the same type of wellness examination. The key distinction is that the appointment can be tailored to your child’s specific need. If your child is an athlete, it is important that you inform the doctor about the sports your child participates in, how often they practice, and any previous sports-related injuries. After that, the doctor can perform a more thorough physical examination based on the needs of an athlete versus a non-athlete.
It’s also vital to realize that your child is unlikely to fail his or her athletic exam and hence be unable to participate in sports. The purpose of a sports physical is to ensure that your child is safe while participating in physical activity.
